Convergence:
Peter Scherrer

Originally from a small town in Switzerland, Peter Scherrer arrived in Los Angeles in 1991, which he saw as creative, fertile ground and home to one of the best design schools in the world. He enrolled at ArtCenter College of Design, where he earned both his BFA and MFA. Scherrer began his professional career in graphic design when it was hands-on and designers had to draw, paint, photograph, process, and produce.

Years later, with a successful studio and substantial portfolio, Scherrer returned to his first medium—painting. His work reflects ever-changing surroundings—the dynamics between neighborhoods and social structures, shifting cityscapes, architecture altered by billboards, graffiti, and decay - in contrast with the openness of the ocean.

Scherrer’s works have been exhibited and collected internationally. He also founded his own gallery named Solo., in San Pedro, CA, where he stages exhibitions for artists he admires.

I love L.A. - I also enjoy traveling and exploring other places. Wandering aimlessly through cities brings me much inspiration but I always love coming back to the light here, the sky, the mix of cultures, the way different worlds collide - the constant changes. I love the laid-back spirit of Los Angeles.

Here I feel like I can just do my own thing, at my own time and pace, without feeling that I’m ruffling anyone's feathers. I'm right here in the midst of it yet so far at the same time. When returning to Europe I feel the history in the architecture and in the streets but there is a certain freedom in not having that history here in Los Angeles. My paintings reflect that freedom.

2025 was definitely a challenging time for me and for many of my contemporaries. I sense the art community growing stronger and bolder again, and I believe that renewed confidence will come through in the work we create and share. For me personally, this period has encouraged a deliberate shift in pace. I’ve consolidated my art fair schedule so I can spend more time in the studio - giving myself room to reflect and create without distraction. I'm full of ideas, and more than anything, I'm curious to see where it all leads next.
